Backup your Hard Drive

Thursday, November 29, 1:00 pm
Location: Computer Classroom, Pinnacle Community Center
Instructor: Allan Pogensky

Your hard drive is probably your computer's most important component as it is the repository of all your vital operating system files, program files, configuration settings, and data files.

All kinds of things can cause problems with your hard drive -- including electrical and mechanical problems as well as a computer virus infection that may make the drive inoperable. There's an old saying in the computer industry -- "The question is not whether a hard drive will fail; the question is when it will fail".

One of, if not the best, ways of protecting yourself against a hard drive "crash" is copying the contents of your hard drive to another hard drive on a regular basis. This will insure that should your original hard drive fail, you will have at hand a complete backup of the hard drive and avoid the hassle of having to reinstall the operating system and all your programs and data to a new drive.

In addition to a general discussion, Allan will show and talk about the new Serial ATA Drives (SATA) and demonstrate one method of backing up your hard drive using a program that will "clone" the contents of one drive to another. It's a simple and straightforward process that's relatively fast and quite effective.
