Classes in November


Boot Camp

Boot Camp is an introductory course designed for members who are new to computing and/or the Microsoft Windows operating system. This hands-on class has a limited enrollment of 12 with each participant working at an individual computer station in the Computer Lab. A four-member team of lead instructor and coaches will provide step-by-step instruction that will include demonstrations, guided practice and individual coaching assistance.

Participants will be introduced to the basic vocabulary and concepts necessary to establish an understanding of Windows. They will be instructed in practical strategies for managing and organizing their own data files, and they will be introduced to the fun and power of a word processing program.

Each Boot Camp is composed of five three-hour Lessons.

Fee:
Ten ($10.00), including a participant's manual
Prerequisites: Must be a Club member and own a computer using Microsoft Windows.

Since this is a hands-on class, registration is limited to 12 students for each class. To register or for additional information please call Susie Scott at 243-8004. She will arrange to register you for the class, issue the class materials and collect the course fee.

 
Build a Computer

Wednesday, November 7, 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
Location: Computer Classroom, Pinnacle Community Center

Instructor: George Lobue

This is a great opportunity to get a hands-on look at what is inside your computer and how all the parts fit together. You may not want to actually build your own computer. However you may want to know what all the stuff in the ADs for new computers mean and how to select upgrades for your current system.

Registration is required as this class is hands-on and must be limited to 15 attendees. To register, email George Lobue at  GLOBUE1@JUNO.COM

(If you have been to a previous "Build a Computer" class you are welcome to sit in on this one with out participating in the hands-on activities.)   

 

Excel for Beginners

Instructor: Mac Singer
Prerequisites:
Must be a Club member and own or have access to a computer using Excel

Excel for Beginners is an introductory course designed for members who want to learn what they can do with Excel and how to do it. This series of three hands-on classes has a limited enrollment of 12 with each participant working at an individual computer station in the Computer Lab. A team consisting of a lead instructor and 2 or 3 coaches will provide step-by-step instruction that will include demonstrations, guided practice and individual coaching assistance.  

Participants will learn the basic vocabulary and concepts necessary to understand Excel. They will learn to use templates, open existing files, and create, format, and save files of their own design. They will learn the basics of formulas and how to move, copy, insert and delete cells, columns, and rows. They will also learn about cell protection.

Gmail (Google Mail)

This class is for beginners as well as experienced users, Vista as well as XP users. You will sign up for a FREE Google email account. No software need be installed. No more fighting Hotmail/AOL/Outlook Express/etc.

You will learn how to:

    send and receive mail from ANY computer ANY operating system, ANYWHERE in the world.
    view attachments (like pictures) and download them to your computer.
    send attachments as part of your email
    set up contacts/address book 
    recognize phishing and SPAM emails

Beyond the Basics

Beyond the Basics
is a series of three classes entitled Windows, Email and Internet. If you consider your computing skill level to be one or two steps beyond "novice" with regard to using these Microsoft applications and you would like to learn or be refreshed on some strategies and shortcuts guaranteed to enhance your pleasure in using your computer more efficiently and effectively, then this offering may be of interest to you. Up to 25 activities will be explained, demonstrated, and practiced during each session.

Prerequisites
: Completion of Boot Camp or equivalent computing experiences; own a computer with the Windows XP operating system; have a 2007 membership in the Sun City Summerlin Computer Club.

(Note: This is a hands-on class that will be held in the Computer Lab. Although there is no fee, advanced registration is required. Participation is limited 12 members. Register for this class by sending an email message to hawaiiguy@cox.net. Include in the message area of your email: YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME; ASSOCIATION NUMBER; and the title of the class(es) you want to attend. Your registration request will be acknowledged in a timely manner.)
 

 

Vista Basics: Introduction to Vista

This will be an introduction to Microsoft's Vista Email System for new and experienced users.  
You will learn:
  • How to sign up to your Cox/Embarq email system
  • How to send mail with/without attachments
     
  • How to view/download attachments
  • How to add addresses to your contact list and manage the list.
  • How to recognize SPAM and Phishing

Vista / IE7

This is for beginners as well as experienced users. Vista as well as XP users (although the stress will be on Vista)

You will learn about Tabs and how to have several sites open, at once, with ease.

You will learn how to set up your home page and how to have several tabs load when windows opens.

You will learn how to add sites to your Trusted Site list

You will learn how to block Pop Ups
