Managing Programs that Run at Startup
Monday, March 17, at 10:30 am, in the Classroom

Presenter: Bill Wilkinson

A computer’s poor performance could be due to the number of programs that run automatically at system start-up. Virtually all program applications that you install using the default installation decide that they should start-up when Windows starts. If you allow these to take control, you can end up with a situation where every program slows down to the point of being unusable.
The reason for this is that all of these programs use a portion of the system memory and resources which leaves a smaller percentage for other programs once they're opened.
The major problem with getting rid of startup items is that they can be hidden in one of several places on your PC. This presentation will show you where to find these pesky problemprograms and how to manage them.

Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. George’s two-pronged set of notes will provide step-by-step instructions for using both Elements and Picasa.

Gmail and Other Google Programs
Wednesday, March 19, at 9:00 am, in the Classroom

Presenter: Pat Lemay

Do you think GMAIL is just another email program? If you do, you are wrong. GMAIL has 2.9 gigabytes (and growing) of free storage, so you can keep emails stored on their server – not on your computer. Email attachments open on their server so the chance of getting a virus is  almost impossible. The best part is that with a GMAIL account you have access to numerous other programs. This Seminar will also cover creating documents and spreadsheets that will be stored on their server. Would you like to safely store 4,000 photographs on their server? This Seminar will show you how. If your computer ever crashes, you will never lose the information in your Google email account, or your documents, spreadsheets and photographs.

You can also access the above information from any computer in the world with your user name and password. The best part – it is all FREE!

File Management: the Crux of Knowing Your Computer
(Note: this presentation is hands-on, with a class size limit of 12; participants will be seated on a first-come basis.)
Wednesday, March 26, at 1:00 pm, in the Lab

Presenter: Edith Einhorn

What do you do with all the documents, spreadsheets, pictures, music and graphics you have stored on your computer? How do you find a specific file when you need it? How do you get rid of unwanted files?

This hands-on presentation will show you how to organize all your computer folders and files for easy storage and retrieval using the built-in system within the Windows operating system. Included are such skills as reading the directory of a CD or other removable storage device, creating folders and subfolders, and copying, moving, deleting and restoring files and folders.

This seminar is a follow-up to Boot Camp and is designed for novice and intermediate users of Windows. While
Windows XP will be the primary teaching tool, basic questions regarding Windows Explorer in Vista will be addressed.

Visiting Vista: a Focused Q&A Session for Novice Users of Microsoft’s Newest Operating System
Monday, March 31, at 10:30 am, in the Classroom

Presenter: Howard Verne

If you are currently an XP user, you may be wondering why you should consider Vista. You may be a person who is familiar and comfortable with XP, but just acquired a new machine with Vista installed. You may have discovered that most of the strategies and techniques that worked in XP also work in Vista. So what’s the big deal? You may have taken the hands-on  class on Vista Basic but found that there were some subjects of personal importance to you that were not covered. Do you need more information about Vista File Manager, for example, or do you want to know more about grouping, stacking, filtering, and “bread crumbs?” Do you need to export your vital data files, such as your email and contacts (addresses) from your XP and import them to your new Vista system? Are there differences in how you “burn” a CD/DVD?

How do you get Vista to skip the login window? Is there anything new with Windows Defender, Microsoft’s anti-spyware program?

These are just a few of the topics that could be covered during this seminar, depending upon the participants’ expressed needs. Bring your notepad to the session so that you can make a record of Howard’s responses. Howard will give priority to all questions that are submitted in advance of the seminar. Once he addresses those questions, then he will open the floor to a question and answer segment. Therefore, to guarantee that you will get an answer to your question, just send an Email message to: hverne@yahoo.com .
