President’s Message

General Meeting Prize Drawings

The SCSCC Board,  after thoughtful discussion,  has decided   to  abandon  the  practice of   drawing for $10 cash door prizes.  Beginning with the January meeting, there will be no prize drawings.  The $2400 / year this was costing will be redirected to replenishing our replacement reserve fund and to increased recognition for our hard-working volunteers.

Thanks

  • To our outgoing 2007 Board members: Marie Claire Denis, Jean-Pierre Denis, Dick Kling and Dan Stachowski, for their many contributions to the club.

  • To our incoming 2008 Board members: Bill Euler, Tom Kimber, Mel Neiman and Rich Walko as well as to returning Board members: Ed Barkin, Edna Bulach, Irene Burt, Pat LeMay, Bill Wilkinson and BJ Martens, for their willingness to serve.

  • To our many other dedicated volunteers who are the lifeblood of our club.

Looking back

2007 saw Microsoft release the Windows Vista operating system in late January.  This once in 5 years event instigated a major upgrade in the way our lab student PCs were set up, including replacing 16 aging PCs with new HP desktops running Vista Home Premium.  Because we also need to offer classes in Windows XP, we also augmented these systems with virtual machines running Windows XP.  We also installed 18 licenses for MS office 2007.

Overall, I believe 2007 was a very successful year for the Club.  As I write, our total paid memberships have passed 1400.

Looking Forward

We plan to continue our successful activities, especially the various SIGs, the Hardware Repair lab, a rich series of seminar offerings, the Boot Camp series, the Beyond the Basics series and the new Vista Basics series.  Education Coordinator Bill Wilkinson is energized to expand all of these programs throughout 2008.

A key project for the lab in 2008 will be to upgrade one of the laser printers and use the lab’s network to enable printing from any PC in the lab to that printer.
