Gmail (Google Mail)

This class is for beginners as well as experienced users, Vista as well as XP users. You will sign up for a FREE Google email account. No software need be installed. No more fighting Hotmail/AOL/Outlook Express/etc. You will learn how to: send and receive mail from ANY computer ANY operating system, ANYWHERE in the world;  view attachments (e.g., pictures) and download them to your computer; send attachments as part of your email; set up contacts/address book; and recognize phishing and spam emails.

This hands-on class has a limited enrollment of 12 with each participant working at an individual computer station. A multi-member team of lead instructor and coaches will provide step-by-step instruction that will include demonstrations, guided practice and individual coaching assistance. There is no fee for this class.

Vista Basics: Introduction to Vista

This session is a basic survey of Microsoft’s Vista Operating System and is intended to give members who have just purchased a new computer with Vista installed or those who have converted from XP to Vista, a way to jump start their knowledge of Microsoft’s newest OS.

    Prerequisite computer skills required to attend this course:
    Ability to use a mouse to open/close/minimize windows
    Ability to start a program (such as Internet Explorer)
    Basic understanding of files and folders
 

This hands-on class has a limited enrollment of 12 with each participant working at an individual computer station. A multi-member team of lead instructor and coaches will provide step-by-step instruction that will include demonstrations, guided practice and individual coaching assistance. Boot Camp: For Members New to Computing or Windows

Location: Computer Lab
Time: All sessions are from 1:00 to 4:00 pm on the dates listed below

Boot Camp is an introductory course designed for members who are new to computing and/or the Microsoft Windows operating system. This hands-on class has a limited enrollment of 12 with each participant working at an individual computer station in the Computer Lab. A multi-member team of lead instructor and coaches will provide step-by-step instruction that will include demonstrations, guided practice and individual coaching assistance.

Participants will be introduced to the basic vocabulary and concepts necessary to establish an understanding of Windows. They will be instructed in practical strategies for managing and organizing their own data files, and they will be introduced to the fun and power of a word processing program. Each Boot Camp is composed of five three-hour sessions.
 

The February class is fully subscribed, i.e., no openings

The dates for the March class are: March 11, 13, 15, 18, and 20

The dates for the April class are: April 1, 3, 5, 8, and 10



Prerequisites:
Must be a Club member and own a computer using Microsoft Windows.
Fee: Ten ($10.00), including a participant's manual

Vista / Internet Explorer 7

This class is designed for beginners as well as experienced users, Vista as well as XP users (although the emphasis will be on Vista).

Participants will learn about Tabs and how to have several sites open at once; how to set up your home page and how to have several tabs load when windows opens; how to add sites to your Trusted Site list; and how to block Pop Ups.

This hands-on class has a limited enrollment of 12 with each participant working at an individual computer station. A multi-member team of lead instructor and coaches will provide step-by-step instruction that will include demonstrations, guided practice and individual coaching assistance. There is no fee for this class.

Beyond The Basics Series: Windows XP

Prerequisites: Completion of Boot Camp or equivalent computing experiences; own a computer with the Windows XP operating system; and have a current membership in the Sun City Summerlin Computer Club.

 

This hands-on class has a limited enrollment of 12 with each participant working at an individual computer station. A multi-member team of lead instructor and coaches will provide step-by-step instruction that will include demonstrations, guided practice and individual coaching assistance. There is no fee for this class.

Taskbar.  Discuss changing the location, size, and how to hide the taskbar. Demonstrate how to add a quick launch bar, how to add items to it, and how to use the open windows buttons. How to access a web address from the taskbar and how to place a web favorite on the taskbar, will be reviewed.  You will learn how to manage the notification area (system tray) and how to remove unwanted items.

Keyboard Commands. Use of common keyboard commands to use in place of mouse maneuvering will be reviewed, demonstrated and practiced.

Start Menu.  We will show you how to personalize your personal computer by customizing the Start Menu In Windows XP, including, start menu style, selecting the options available from the start menu, adding Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to the start menu, change the size of the icons on the start menu’s primary list, and “pin” a program to the start menu. We will also demonstrate how to change the way All Programs opens from the start menu, change the view of the All Programs menu, and how to view the most recently opened documents in Windows XP. Learn how to organize the start menu to suit your needs, start a program each time windows starts, search for a file or folder, delete a folder or file from the start menu, rename a folder or file from the start menu, move items from the desktop directly to the start menu.

Develop Some Strategies To Optimize Web Surfing Skills. Select a good portal page as a home page; customize the browser’s toolbar; save favorite Web pages; view Web pages that have been recently visited; increase or decrease the number of days in the browser’s history; keep a search list intact; increase the print size on most Web pages; get a bigger view of a Web page; share Web page finds with a friend via email; place Web shortcuts on the desktop; reload slow pages; make a correction if the wrong link has been selected; and use print preview to see what a printed web page will look like.
