General Meeting

Our April General Meeting will be held at Desert Vista on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 7 pm.  The presentation will be given by a team from the Apple Macintosh store and will cover the latest in Macintosh news and products.  See the General Meeting article for more details.

Our May meeting will be our Education / SIG Fair and we again plan to have this be an open house for all interested Sun City residents.

Lab Network Printer

We have added a new black and white HP LaserJet P2015DN printer in the lab.  This printer has a built-in network print server that allows any PC in the lab to connect to it and print. All of the student PCs, instructor PCs, Macintoshes and even a LINUX virtual machine have been connected and can print.

Sign-in Stations - Bar Code Readers

You will fare best if you hold your ID card near the table, about 3 to 4 inches below the scanner, and move it so the red scan line crosses the bars at about 90 degrees.  You do not need to grasp the scanner with one hand while holding your card under it.

Membership

As of March 19, our 2008 membership is 1122.

Education Activities for April

We have a great line-up of classes, seminars and SIGs for April.  See the April calendar as well as the Seminars, Classes and "SIGs and KKs" pages for full details.  Our education program is one of the great benefits of belonging to the Club.  No matter what your experience or skill level, you should find something to suit your needs.

Merger – Internet SIG and Q&A Kaffee Klatch

Beginning in April, the Internet SIG and Q&A Kaffee Klatch will be merged.  The merged session will keep the name “Q&A Kaffee Klatch” and will meet Monday mornings at 8:30 AM.  Helen Perryman will moderate.  The time slot previously used by the Q&A Kaffee Klatch (1st and 3rd Monday afternoons at 1 PM) will be used for seminars.

Technical Tidbits

Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista is now available for public download at the Microsoft.com download center.   Reports are that Microsoft has also released Service Pack 3 for Windows XP to manufacturing.  It should be available for download in the near future.   Both of these large updates are reported to improve Windows performance, reliability and security.  We have placed a copy of the full Vista SP1 in a folder on each of the lab PCs, so that dial-up members can come in to the lab and copy the service pack off onto their own CD or DVD disks.  As soon as we have a good copy of XP SP3, we will do the same.
